AI ads vs UGC ads: which should a D2C brand use?
The short answer: use both, for different jobs. AI ads are best for testing many hooks quickly and for product-led demos. UGC with real people is best where trust decides the sale, like skincare, supplements and baby products. And from 29 December 2026, India’s ad standards body says AI must never pose as a real customer giving a testimonial.
We make AI ads, so weigh our view with that in mind. Every number below links to its source at the end.
AI ads vs UGC ads at a glance
| AI ads | UGC ads (real creators) | |
|---|---|---|
| Typical price per video | ₹7,999 – ₹1 lakh+ product-led ads at the low end | ₹2,500 – ₹7,500 per creator video ₹3,000–₹40,000 through an agency |
| Time to first draft | Hours to a few days | Usually a week or more, including shipping the product to the creator |
| Changing the hook | Quick and cheap to remake | Often needs a reshoot |
| Best at | Testing angles, product demos, offers, launches | Trust, real reactions, testimonials |
| Watch out for | Looking “too AI”; labelling rules | Usage-rights fees; less control over the script |
What the research says about performance
The largest public study so far, run by researchers from Columbia, Harvard, TU Munich and Carnegie Mellon on Taboola’s ad platform, looked at live ads with more than 500 million impressions and 3 million clicks. Three findings matter for D2C brands:
- On average, AI ads held their own. In the raw data, AI-made ads averaged a 0.76% click-through rate against 0.65% for human-made ads. When the researchers compared like-for-like ads from the same advertiser and campaign, the two performed about the same.
- Looking AI-made is what hurts. AI ads that people didn’t recognise as AI did best of all. Ads that looked artificial, often from heavy polish, very saturated colour or perfect symmetry, did worse, whoever actually made them.
- Conversions didn’t drop. The study found no sign that AI creatives brought in lower-quality clicks.
Two caveats. The study ran on one ad platform, not Meta, and its strongest results were in food and drink and personal finance. Vendor benchmarks are more mixed, with some reporting weaker conversion from AI creative on higher-priced products. Treat AI as a strong testing tool, not a guaranteed winner.
The new rules for AI in Indian ads
The Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) has issued guidelines on synthetically generated content in ads. They were published on 29 September 2026 and apply from 29 December 2026. In plain terms:
- Label it when AI content materially influences a buyer’s decision and leaving it out would mislead, for example showing a product that doesn’t exist yet. Suggested wording is “Video created using AI” or “Video enhanced using AI”.
- Never allowed, even with a label: fabricated endorsements or testimonials, and AI visuals that exaggerate results.
- No label needed for routine edits that don’t change the claim, purely decorative AI elements, and subtitles.
Meta also applies its own “AI info” label to some ads made or significantly edited with generative AI, and has said it will start detecting ads made with outside AI tools.
The practical rule: an AI presenter can explain your product as your brand. It must never pretend to be a customer saying “this worked for me”. If you want that kind of social proof, use real customers or real creators, with their permission.
Which should you use?
- Testing what to say: AI ads. Make several hooks for less than one production shoot, and keep the winner.
- Showing what the product does: AI product-led ads built from your real photos, so the packaging stays accurate.
- Proving it works: real UGC, real reviews and real before-and-afters, never AI ones.
- Trust-heavy categories (skincare, supplements, baby care): lead with real people, and use AI for offers and product demos.
- Launches and festive sales: AI ads, because a new offer can be turned around in days, not weeks.
A sensible mix for a ₹1 lakh monthly ad budget
| What | Why | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| 5 AI product-led ads | Test five hooks and offers every month | ₹34,999 one 5-pack |
| 2 real UGC videos | Social proof for the hooks that win | about ₹10,000 2 × ₹5,000 mid-range, plus usage rights |
| Total | 7 fresh ads a month | about ₹37,000 |
That keeps creative costs at a little over a third of ad spend while you learn what works. Once you know your winning angles, spend more on real UGC for those angles.
Questions
Do AI ads need a label in India?
Not always. Under ASCI’s guidelines, which apply from 29 December 2026, a label such as “Video created using AI” is needed when the AI content materially influences what a buyer decides and leaving it out would mislead them. Routine edits, purely decorative AI elements and subtitles don’t need one. Separately, Meta adds its own “AI info” label to some ads made or edited with AI.
Can an AI avatar give a customer testimonial?
No. ASCI lists fabricated endorsements and testimonials as prohibited, even with a label. An AI presenter can explain your product as the brand, but it must not pretend to be a real customer sharing their experience.
Which converts better, AI ads or UGC?
It depends on the product and the job the ad does. A large 2026 study found AI-made ads matched human-made ads on click-through rate once like-for-like ads were compared, with no drop in conversions, but ads that looked AI-made did worse. For trust-heavy purchases, real people talking about real results are still hard to beat.
Is UGC cheaper than AI ads?
Sometimes, per video. Indian UGC creators publish rates of roughly ₹2,500–₹7,500 per video before usage rights, and agencies charge more. Product-led AI ads cost a few thousand rupees, with no product shipping, shoot day or usage-rights fee. The bigger difference is speed: AI ads can be remade in hours when a hook doesn’t work.
